Why Am I Me?
Self Portrait Poem- Extra Credit #2
At home I am loud.
Subtle is not in my vocabulary.
When it comes to my siblings three is a crowd,
but is five a party?
At school I am shy
I sqeak like a mouse in a cage.
Is there a reason why
my emotions never turn to rage?
Sometimes I wish I could push sound out,
to not see the things that make me go hysterical.
I know these are senses I could not live without
But I can't help but think it could be reasonable.
I'm told my hair is never the same shade of red or brown.
I try to conceal it- I sometimes wish it were black.
It's always in my way frizzing all around.
Though I know I would hate it if somebody took it back.
New York State standards say I'm "smart".
I don't really feel like it in the real world.
I always feel like I fail especially in art.
I want to pop like a balloon when I fall after I twirled.
Yes, I fully aware of my perfectionist ways.
Everything I do has to meet up to my expectation.
If not it can be hard to see the sun's rays.
My friends do not undestand why I put myself in such a situation.
It is very easy to see my flaws.
I worry excessively and wear metal rimmed glasses.
When I am angry I am sure that people think my nails are claws.
I'm always afraid I'll be late to my classes.
Shortest in my dance classes- also one of the youngest
I try to use my energy and heart.
I know that if I work I could become the strongest.
But I try so hard my mouth puckers like I ate a sweet tart.
So now you know me
the good and the bad.
I live with myself- it's not like I can flee.
I will change later because now is just a fad.

Poetic Elements:
One element I used was simile when I say that my mouth puckers like I ate a sweet tart. I used the reference because I think everybody knows what to imagine when someone eats something that is too sour or too sweet. A simile is also used when I compare myself to a squeaking mouse in a cage. Sometimes people say I sound like a mouse when I am surprised or excited. I thought cage would represent the school as a symbol.
Another element I used was end rhyme. Every stanza the last word of every other line rhyme. I used end rhyme because I thought it showed a different side of the elderly Queen than the public is allowed to see if it really existed.
I also use onomatopoeia, rhyme scheme, masculine rhyme, and symbol.
