Welcome to this website which was created for a Poetry /Coffeehouse project in English class.
If you look to the left, at first sight you will see a landscape that appears to have been taken out of a Sci-Fy film. You believe that it is real and something that amazing exists... In real life it does not, however it did inspire you momentarily! People can be inspired by beautiful things that they experience. Poets can help us to experience what they experienced either in their dreams or lifetime with words.
Women were not respected at the time or before Women's Rights. Many girls knew this and set themselves up with low expectations of what they would accomplish in life. This usually began with marriage, childcare, and housekeeping and ended with living out their last years quietly perhaps with grandchildren. During the Roaring 20s their role changed and Maya Angelou was one of the new feminine poets who surfaced.
Maya Angelou is one of my inspirations because of the heart that she puts into her writing. She knows how to use words to make a person think and come to realize things about others and the world. Dr. Angelou has written I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and has written the poetry used in the documentary The Black Candle.
Poetry does not have to be aimed towards sharing beauty though. Some poets write about their discontent with society or an event in politics and economy. This can include anything from a recession in the stock market to protesting against cleaning your bedroom!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Poets can do whatever they wish to do with what they write. Traditional patterns can be used such as limericks, haiku's, or acrostics. No particular format even has to be used! You could just write what your feelings are freely making a new line wherever it sounds right or maybe not. I hope that this website enlightens you in the art of poetry and helps you to see its different sides.
-Enjoy!
